WHILE looking through an old magazine rack in their house, a local family has found a copy of The Weekly Times from September 11, 1869. The paper, with the No.1 printed on it, is believed to be the masthead’s first issue.
A valuable find, one may think, but it is a mystery to the local family exactly how the paper was there in the first place, with no memory of it ever mentioned within the family.
Maybe time travel?

KERANG Cricket Club have been handing out fines to those who get a mention in the paper. One amount for a photo and one for just the name. A couple of blokes who have been making runs and taking wickets, who shall for today only remain nameless, have been racking up the debt. One of them, ‘Five-short’ must have batted well on January 28 to fall agonisingly short of his maiden century.
Then there are others like Jon Roberts, Matt Hodgson, Rylan Delamare, Bob Sutterby, Jackie Bright, Billy Hogg (who did well in his first game on Saturday) and Liam Jardine, who also wish to remain nameless but haven’t performed as well as they would have hoped.

MURRABIT were in all sorts of trouble against Kerang as one batsman was wreaking havoc, until young Cooper Hein took the pill and grabbed a couple of wickets in consecutive balls to start the rot for Kerang.
Cooper and Michael Hartley both snared three wickets.
Cooper’s folks Nick and Erin would have been quite proud, with Erin able to offer any advice – once she researched the game a bit from a few close sources available.

IT was great to see that the River Raiders FC annual lilo race on the Murray was back on Australia Day.
It seems the Raiders have picked up a couple of star players for the footy season. Will Callow and the team are working hard to move up the ladder for 2023.

WITH all the water that is still hanging around the Benjeroop area, the local community have done heaps of work helping those affected by the floods.
The Murrabit Lions Club have been doing plenty and their fearless leader, Neil Hopkins has and will continue to show great community spirit as will the whole club.
A few folks have received hampers and gift packs and we all hope that these small gestures have helped to ease the pain.

BARHAM kids have finally started school this week. They obviously start a week later than the Victorian kids and also may get an extra week in the Western regions to allow for the heat.
A heat rule for school – fair enough. They have one for cricket, bowls and tennis. Why isn’t there one for column writing?

A POPULAR Lake Charm electrician was taking his bins out for collection and had them hooked to the back of his vehicle. The word is that he forgot they were there and was seen dragging them down the highway at speed. A call from the wife may have alerted him to the problem.
Those little wheels may have got a bit hot, I think.

WHILE on cricket, Wandella’s A Grade side had a great win a couple of weekends ago, defeating RSL by one run, running a bye from the second-last delivery of the day to get them over the line. A great knock of 61 by Luke Murray was the backbone of the innings, with Laine Gibbons opening the innings with 40 from 41 balls (he fell when the score was 45) and Rohan Oliver with 28 from 30 balls timing his knock to perfection.
Boden and Ethan McKnight contributed well with the ball, taking three and four wickets respectively.
