From family, to footy to racing

Caught up with Graham and Dot McKenzie in Echuca the other week.

They have been over in Echuca for about seven years now and both are looking fit and healthy, and they’ve been up to see family at Airlie Beach recently.

Son Dean organised to get them up there. Nice work Macka.

Great to catch up with some former locals.

The Marong Footy Club in the Loddon Valley League have been consistently winning by about 100 points each week. The league’s top three goalkickers are from Marong and they have four in the top ten.

They are looking to move to the Heathcote District league next year. That might give Pyramid Hill or Serp an opening for a flag!

Whoops. Hold that. It now seems that the AFL Central Victoria have put a hold on that for 2024. Media release Thursday arvo stating there will “not be any changes to the senior football/netball competitions for the 2024 season.”

So that means Cohuna spend another year in the CMFNL also. Getting their junior back would help their cause for the future also.

It is noted that consistent with AFL Victoria Community Affiliate Regulations, club transfers between leagues for the 2024 season can occur at any time between August 1 and October 31 2023.

Existing requests for clubs to transfer leagues for 2024 will continue the process they are currently undertaking.

Some interesting results from video reviews and a few umpiring decisions recently in the AFL.

No point complaining. The technology is what it is and until it gets better we will have to put up with it.

Thing that gets me is that a decision then becomes big news. Why not trust the umpire? Why not trust the technology?

Admittedly the handball to Cameron should have been pulled up, but the umpire has to see it to make a decision. (How come he didn’t?) The video review showed he was clearly out, but we can’t stop the game for every decision and have our footy as slow as the American game.

The Exchange Hotel is running a magnificent little Bingo night every Thursday evening at 7pm with all proceeds going to local charity.

The Hotel also provides the prizes at their own expense with some prizes also donated. Get along for a great evening.

President of Kerang Turf Club, Dasher Connelly, would have to be happy with the extra meeting the club had on August 12.

Along with the extra meeting, they have their new undercover area on the way with footings just laid for the 49 x 11 metre structure.

Also, the usual Boxing Day meeting will not be Boxing Day this year. It will be held on December 30, so we might have to call it the December 30 meeting. It’s something they are giving a go. Hopefully they will get the usual support from the local race-loving community.

Congratulations to Dasher, Colleen and the committee. Great work and things are looking up for the progressive club.
