There was a rumour going around that Prime Minister Albo was going to drop into town a couple of Friday’s back for a quick chat with a few locals.

Luckily this didn’t eventuate as it would have upset a few of the locals who gather there at 11am for their daily meeting.

Local journo Phoebe Doyle is leaving the Gannawarra Times and Guardian and heading up to Mildura.

One of her final jobs for the Gannawarra Times was meant to be to mix it with Prime Minister Albanese at the Sporties as per above. Lucky Albo avoided the hard-hitting questions from Phoebe.

As the Gannawarra Times bids a farewell to a journo, a mini golf tournament was held in Swan Hill to send-off said staff member.

As you would expect, this type of competition usually ends up quite competitive, but on this occasion we let Jenna Mobilio win.

A few of the Aussies were doing pretty well in the Australian Open. Thanasi Kokkinakis had a couple of good wins. In one match he took the final set 7-6, 10-8 in the tiebreaker. He made it to the round of 64 but was eventually outed by Grigor Dimitrov in four sets.

Max Purcell also had a win to get past the first round but was eventually defeated in five in the round of 64 by Casper Ruud. Jordan Thompson put up a decent fight against Stefanos Tsitsipas, and Alexei Popyrin snaffled a set from Novak Djokovic but lost in four.

Alex de Minaur would like to say that he will win an Australian Open one day. Will it be this year?

In the ladies Ajla Tomljanovic and Storm Hunter advanced past the first round with Tomljanovic losing her match in the round of 32. It’s all a bit hard to follow.

Of course the Aussies will do well in the doubles in both ladies’ and men’s competitions

What happens to our Test team if Cameron Green bats well and makes number four his own spot? Does that mean if Steve Smith fails as an opener he is dropped?

School holidays are rapidly coming to a close, with Victoria’s Term 1 commencing on Tuesday, January 30.

Hope that all kids had a great break and come back to school refreshed and ready to learn.

So there was a bit of a meeting last night regarding the town streets being flooded during the rain on Christmas Day and after new year.

The meeting was originally meant to be at the Basketball function room, if that’s what it is called, but was moved to the Memorial Hall, probably because of an expected high attendance.

Don’t know how it all went, as this was written prior to the meeting date, but one thing that we can judge for sure, is that if we get 25 mm of rain in an hour tomorrow, the streets will flood again.

The Shire will have it all organised and do the very best possible for the township.

Speaking of the weather, it’s been a bit muggy recently. Some obviously blame climate change, but maybe it is expected. We are coming out of a 12,000-year Ice Age, so it’s meant to be getting warmer.

Just a bit of food for thought.

Wandella’s cricket captain, Ryan Barnes would have to be pretty happy with where the club is at the moment, still being placed in third or fourth spot on the SHDCA ladder.

This is a pretty good effort considering none of the team’s specialist batsmen have hit form yet.

Look out when they do.

Then there were the Hogg blokes, Billy and Declan who got amongst the runs in the Kerang B Grade match on January 13.

Youngster Declan was batting well but copped one and had to retire hurt.

It was then that old man Billy took hold of the reins and was steering the ship to a decent score.

Declan then thought he had better get back out there as he was in form. He ended up with 80-odd and Dad Bill notched up a pretty good 50.

Kerang won the match pretty easily.
