Interesting that the natural flash flood in January has caused higher water levels in the Johnson and Hird swamps, and both will have their water levels lowered this week to prevent the growth of reeds encroaching on the open water.

Then the death of Redgums is 100 per cent laid at the feet of irrigators back “when the wetlands were irrigation storages”.

Following only two weeks of football (Round 0 and Round 1) the AFL have shown that they are not too serious about the head high stuff. Carlton’s Hewett hit Lachie Neale who retaliated. Both received a $2500 fine. Well at least they were both found guilty.

But the inconsistencies have continued with the reports from the second week of football (round 1) being not much different to that incident and blokes received a week. Hewett’s was graded as careless conduct, low impact and high contact, and Neale’s was intentional, low impact body contact.

Hewett’s wasn’t careless – it was silly. He knew exactly what he was doing. Size up the chin, look away and then give it a little tap. Then because Neale’s was intentional, it doesn’t say much that you don’t get time off for an intentional stomach punch.

Of course the commentators will say “there’s not much in that”. They are part of the problem.

Redmond did a bit more than a jumper punch on Newcombe and got a week, as he should. So let’s see if the league is consistent with that.

From the Komment on March 5: If the AFL maintain their nerve following the Powell-Pepper incident, which isn’t guaranteed, this would be a good result for footy.

March 19: Does this mean that the AFL are really trying to protect the head? Careful, but they could be.

Yep, so there’s not much faith here that they will. We will keep an eye on future rounds.

Had a great chat with old mate Neil Hopkins who also gets a bit frustrated watching the footy, but still loves it.

Having umpired heaps in his day, Hoppo’s sympathy goes out to umpires who have to adjudicate local matches. The way the AFL is umpired is making it harder for local umpires on a weekly basis.

If only they would listen to us Hoppo, we could fix footy. At least so it would suit a couple of old fellas.

Caught up with Jeff Anderson in the street last week and despite him being mentioned in the Komment on March 19, we are still friends.

So now that Jeff mentioned that he was mentioned, he must be mentioned again.

The young fella played footy for Union, then when he purchased the shoe shop in Scoresby Street, Kerang, he played for Kerang. Think that he may have won two or three B and Fs while he was at Kerang too, so that’s gotta be good. Still looks fit enough to play, too.

The Tassie Devils are up and about with something like 100,000 members already. They have a new logo but the design of the jumper leaves a bit to be desired.

I think I can remember former Cohuna gun, Shane Fell, playing at full forward for Tassie in an interstate match against Victoria wearing what appears to be the exact same jumper as the new design. That may have been back in the 80s. It is a “foundation” jumper though, that they will wear two or three times. We await the official design.

Being a footy jumper, once a colour is linked to a club, the association with that colour usually sticks. But then we have Carlton’s white strip. If Carlton win a match in that strip, they still sing “We are the Navy Blues”. Oh, that’s right, they have never won a match in that strip.

Politician Jacqui Lambie still wants the team but doesn’t want to have to pay for a new stadium. Somehow, I don’t think she will get her wish.

Perhaps Jacqui can buy them a paddock to play on. Timber post and rail fencing. Goal umpires could be in long white coats and white wide-brimmed hats. It would suit their jumper design.

Granny Niall celebrated her birthday with family at cluBarham last Tuesday evening. Mary must have turned at least 30.

Granny Mary Niall had some assistance blowing out her candles from great grandkids Fallon and Raynar.

Congratulations, Mary.

Oscar and Tania Aertssen from Kerang Computers were on the sauce this last weekend.

They had friends around and were really making sauce from the Wandella Cricket Club’s tomatoes. Perhaps a few drinks were included. All the best folks.
