Ups and downs of footy tipping

Komment by Kurl

FOOTY Tipping started off the best it ever has for Kurl, being right up near the lead in the early stages of the year.

Then of course we took a dive, all the way down to the bottom section of the leader board.

That Lindsay bloomin’ Hein had to remind me that he is about five or six ahead of me, and old mate Noel Robertson sticks in his two cents worth as well, but then wouldn’t life be boring without a bit of competition.

But as things are going, Kurl couldn’t pick the skin off a rice pudding in a heat wave.

Did I see that Tige Neville tipped them all last week? Now that’s just ridiculous, Tige. Enough of that.

WHILE speaking to Noel and Lindsay, George Fenton was up at the bar in Sporties getting himself a … cuppa. Of course he wasn’t having beer.

George was a gun footballer in his day and played for quite a while. More than 300 games in the seniors at Wandella, then at least another 100 in the Reserves.

Lindsay says that George was still going around in the Seniors when he started playing.

You may think that either Lindsay started pretty young or George was ancient, but either way, both were excellent footballers in their day. Well done to both these legends.

WAS recently talking to Reg Hipwell from Cohuna.

Reg and lovely wife Judy have been spending a bit of time away. They have been travelling on the Queen Anne.

They had a magnificent trip with a couple of stops in Scotland and three stops in Iceland.

Being Iceland’s summer, they were having 24-hour daylight, but I think that Reg and Judy would have been used to that, as I’m sure they would have worked probably more than a couple of 24-hour days in their time.

Now, Judy was originally a Kerang girl, nee Walker. Judy was the belle of the ball at the official opening of the Kerang Memorial Hall and has the photo to prove it.

Great to chat to the lovely couple.

GREAT to see that Cohuna lad Josh Treacy has signed on to Fremantle for another six seasons.

Josh has turned out to be one of the premier centre half forwards in the competition, continually kicking his two or three goals and always doing the hard work required.

Congratulations to the young fella.

WHILE mentioning Cohuna, the local footy team seems to be coming good at the right end of the season and their percentage is only second to top team Kerang.

In fifth position on the ladder prior to Saturday’s bye, the Kangas face Swan Hill and NNW United before the season’s end, so finals are still in the mix.

The team they will be fighting against for that fifth spot is Balranald, who play Woorinen and Tooleybuc-Manangatang in coming weeks following the bye on Saturday. Someone may just have to pull out a big game to ensure a finals appearance.

The Kangas still want to change leagues too, I believe. Not a fan of this move, not only for the CMFL but also for the Cohuna Kangas. But Kurl has been wrong before.

TALKING footy with a former GRFL administrator who knows everyone, and he introduced me to Genna Palker, wife of Luke. Turns out that I should have known Genna anyway.

Luke was a Quambatook lad who gave his all for the local footy club and did his best to keep the club alive. Since Quamby have folded he is now playing with Lefty’s Kerang Reserves.

WHILE on the Kerang Reserves, coach Lefty has been away for the previous two weeks and the team has carried on without him, winning easily

The Seniors have achieved top spot on the ladder in Lefty’s absence also.

MIA Hirst has performed well in the Victorian team in the School Sports Australia 12-and-Under Australian Football Championships girls’ team last week.

The team has defeated the ACT, WA, NT and NSW teams, and as of Wednesday last week, had not been scored against. Being undefeated, the team could go on to win the title with only South Australia and Queensland to play.

Mia, a bottom age player, has been rotating off a half back flank and on ball, as well as half forward and on ball.

Dad Johnny is the team’s water boy, and grandfather Jim would love to be involved, but must stand back and quietly watch.

Congratulations to all concerned.
