From footy to flannos

A COUPLE of Komments were missed on July 27 and August 3 while Kurl did a bit of a cruise in the Kimberley with Kelvin Manners and two of his cousins and then a few days in Darwin. Kelvin is a former Barham-Cohuna lad from way back in the early 70’s.

While up there we had an evening out with Kelvin’s brother Paul who was a former Union footballer back in the day, and his cousin Peter who Kurl played a bit of cricket against a few years ago.

Paul has been up in Darwin for ages and Peter now has a pub about 40km north of Hobart.

IT’S interesting some of the folk you meet while on holidays, and one bloke was a mad, keen Rabbitohs supporter.

Simon Masman is also a Sydney Swans supporter and was happy that the Swans were doing okay, as the Rabbitohs most definitely aren’t, being towards the bottom of the NRL ladder.

But then on August 3, the Swans had their worst defeat in many years and then a come-from-behind win over Collingwood. Don’t panic Simon, I have supported Carlton for a long time, so I know your pain. We are lucky that the Aussies have done well in the Olympics.

Simon was the only passenger on the trip to watch the first night of Olympic competition to the very end, with captain Bill telling Simon to get to bed prior to shutting the ship down for the night. That’s commitment.

All the best young fella

Postscript: He tells me that he is still the last person in his house that was watching the Olympics, with captain Rae not sending him to bed. With the Rabbitohs crashing, the Olympics was Gold.

THE 50-metre penalty that wasn’t paid to McStay against McCartin in the Pies versus Swans match.

The journo asked McRae: “What do you think about Daniel McStay, do you think that should be paid, as a 50-metre penalty?”

Now he would have an option to say nothing, but instead he replied with: “I reckon if it was at the MCG it would have been paid. There’s definitely an advantage with a home ground. I thought it was a 50-metre penalty to the letter of the law.”

The AFL want the coaches to be open, yet he gets a warning for his answer. The journo should get the warning for asking an obvious question he knows the coach isn’t allowed to reply to in a negative manner.

Of course it should have been a 50-metre penalty, but it wasn’t paid. So someone erred. Because McRae said that “the umpires sometimes get it wrong”, he is warned by the AFL.

The journo should show some courage and write that the umpire should have paid a 50-metre penalty without asking the coach’s opinion – or at least write his own opinion.

Argh, but then the AFL might ban him. Don’t see a problem there.

Swans supporter Simon Masman (mentioned above) would only reply with “Swings and roundabouts I reckon”. Clearly not prepared to commit – nice handpass Simon.

LOCALS Bryce Mimmo and Erin Byrne are currently preparing for the “S***box Rally” to be held in October.

All funds from the rally go towards the Cancer Council and as the car still requires the correct stickers to be applied, and lots of other work to be done behind the scenes, Erin is as busy as a one-armed builder pitching a tent in a tornado.

All the best to the team and don’t panic. It will all come together.

THE planned LMW water mains works in Fitzroy street are almost complete.

One of the blokes doing a great job is Clinton Edge who is a Macorna lad from way back. Clinton informs me that although it may have inconvenienced a few folk, the public have been exceptional in their acceptance of the disruption to the street.

Good on you Clinton and the team.

RULCIFIY’S are standing shoulder to shoulder with Australian farmers, being the place to go to support the Flanno for a Farmer Appeal. Well done to Karen and staff.

Don your finest flanno on August 23 to raise money to help with mental wellbeing support to farmers in need.

JON Roberts’ mum has been asking why Kurl calls the Kerang Reserves “Lefty’s two’s” and doesn’t give Jon a mention?

As Robbo is the Kerang Reserves co-coach, he most definitely does deserve a mention.

Robbo’s mum would have to be quite confident that son Jon can get their Reserves over the line, with or without Lefty’s help.

So, Mrs Lesley Roberts, I have given Jon a mention, hopefully he can give himself a game and you will be able to watch the Kerang Reserves do their best, ably led by Jon James Roberts.
