Talking about cricket and fishing

NEW South Wales batsman Sam Konstas recently turned 19 and appears to have the goods to be a top-notch opener, having already scored two centuries and one 50 in only five matches, averaging 45.

THE Australian Test team need an opening partner for Usman “Uzzy” Khawaja and Nathan McSweeney and Marcus Harris are looking the likely ones to get the job, although the selectors have already given Harris a chance, then dropped him.

With Konstas, we don’t know how good he can be and the best place for him to learn is playing the best possible cricket. Give the kid or McSweeney a go.

Steve Waugh saying Cameron Bancroft should be in, is well off the mark. The selectors wouldn’t pick him when we needed an opener last season and he was in the best form of any player in domestic cricket. This season he has made only 10 runs in four hits – excluding the Australia A match.

Either way, this selection will show us the selectors criteria

David Warner saying he was ready for the call-up was a good joke but probably in bad taste.

LLOYD and Maria Lewis were enjoying the lovely weather outdoors last Wednesday at Chino’s.

Maria spoke of their first Christmas in Australia back in the mid 70’s, where they were invited to spend the festive holiday with Byron and Joy Reid and family. Being with the Reid family would be a great way to start your time in Kerang.

In speaking cricket, we thought that Lloyd and I both watched all five days of the 1975 Boxing Day test at the G against the West Indies. I’ve since realised that the match I watched was the second test at the G. It was a six-match series. I remember Redpath getting a century, Viv Richards cutting loose and the crowd chanting “Kill, kill, kill” as Thompson ran in to bowl at Lance Gibbs.

BARB and Peter Hall have been in business at Halls Hardware for 25 years this coming Friday. Congratulations to you both and your wonderful staff.

CARLTON – Kennedy to get some trade points

JONH Dee has consistently attended the Red Fin Classic over the last four years and this year was the first time he caught a Reddy. Well done John.

Funny thing is that brother Robert caught a Cormorant this year.

“Chick” has raised some champion anglers.

THE numbers were a bit down this year for the Lake Charm Red Fin Classic.

The raffle for the boat was won by an out-of-towner, with the winner’s son also claiming the prize of a fishing rod. Congratulations.

At least Deb Cottrell didn’t win it. Is the rumour correct that she was banned from having a ticket? Nah! Only being serious Deb. Deb is looking for a fishing comp with a car as the prize, because she needs a vehicle to tow the boat she won last year.

THE blokes from the Men’s Shed have helped Charmane and the team fix up the bar in the beer garden at the Sporties.

Pretty sure that the place would have been rocking with 4 To The Bar playing there last Friday. Schlitzy and the gang always put on a great show.

CAUGHT up with Trevor Ritchie last week and while we were having a chat, Elaine Curtis (nee Harvey) joined the conversation.

Elaine and Scruff (that’s Trevor) both attended Murrabit’s 100th birthday and were reminiscing about the bakers and the general store being in a certain street or another corner and the Brownings, “No, not that family, they weren’t related…” then the Harveys, “You remember Royce…” The Murrabit birthday was obviously a great catch-up.

The train used to run to Murrabit three times a week. Yep, it was all happening back in the day.

ISN’T the US Elections on later this week? Of course we never wish to get political in this column, although I must say that I would much prefer one candidate to win over the other.

It seems all quite clear to me who should be elected so from my point of view we can only hope that it goes that way. Clearly, others may hope is goes the other way, but then, that’s democracy.
