Copland dad and son at the crease

WANDELLA batsman Samuel Copland scored 152 against Ultima TUF in the B Grade on November 9.

Dad Alec got to bat with his son for six balls, safely giving the strike back to Sam after scampering through for a bye, allowing Sam two balls to make two runs. On the penultimate ball, Sam didn’t make a run, then smashed the final ball of the innings to the boundary to end up on 152. Dad was probably more nervous than Sam.

In the next innings, Wandella bowler Harrison Pearson took 4/15 from his 5.1 overs. Great effort Harry.

And did I see that Mick Bott was keeping? What’s going on there? The bloke can bowl a bit too.

BARHAM Koondrook Cricket Club held a back-to on November 9, and quite a few living legends returned to the club.

Legends such as Geoff and Paul Molin, Eric Lake, Alan Millar, Des Hein, Gary Napier, Billy Hollard and Barry Stewart to name a few attended (sorry for anyone who thought they should have been mentioned.)

Hope that they all had a brilliant evening following an excellent win by the A Grade that day.

There were lots of scorebooks to view, and as I had played against BK on many occasions, I thought it a good idea to search out my own name. Found it. Made a blob in that game – probably deserved that.

LET’S hope that the Gannawarra Shire will name the lane between the Quambatook Bowling Club and Lawn Tennis Club Norma Way after Norma Bennett as proposed by the Quambatook Community Development Association.

Surely the Shire can do this. She was a legend – a life well lived for the local community.

A FORMER Kerang District Football League player with no current allegiances to any team came in for a chat about footy and made it known that the Central Rivers Board should do all they can to keep footy alive and ensure the future of the Golden Rivers Football Netball League.

Totally agree. Let’s assume that the board will do all in their power to keep the GRFNL alive, which should include recruiting prospective teams.

JIMMY Clark was playing golf with the big guns last week, teeing off in Wednesday’s Pro Am with professional Phoenix Campbell at Murray Downs. Jim would have been a bit disappointed to not be playing with Geoff Ogilvie who has a local connection to Kerang. That might be a bit harsh on Phoenix Campbell but, imagine how disappointed Phoenix Campbell would have felt.

Can’t you just see Jim teeing off with a large gallery looking on. Don’t shank it Jim.

Word is that he was looking for a ride to and from the golf, clearly looking to commit to the social side of the game, but lovely wife Kaye eventually took him.

It turns out that Jim’s team won the day by a massive six shots. We must assume that he dragged teammates Phoenix, James and Kyle along with him. Well done to the McLardy McShane Clark team.

SOME person has vandalised the new cricket pitch roller down at Riverside Park. This begs the question why?

SO McSweeney got into the Aussie Test squad as we suggested either he or Sam Konstas should get the opening gig.

Regarding talk of McSweeney not scoring as fast as the man he replaces in Warner, Khawaja said, “You’ve got five days to do it … I don’t know why you need to score fast.

“Opening’s as much about scoring runs as it is about being able to absorb.”

Scoring fast hasn’t been working for the Poms, and Australia only scored fast when we had a truly dominant team

The selectors rested a few for the one dayers, so we should be ripe for the Tests. Best of luck to all.

THE AFL Draft commences tomorrow and continues Thursday, with the Pre-Season Draft and Rookie Draft continuing Friday.

St Kilda will surely be after a former Carlton player. They usually are, which won’t help them much.

Richmond have first dibs and are likely to grab that kid that says he plays like Dustin Martin and Jordan De Goey. The kid says he plays like them, not as well as them, so we’ll go easy on him.

SO I mentioned last week that a few folks returned from a holiday in Japan. Word is that most of them, apart from Lefty, had every intention of turning up for work on the Friday. Nola Wright was one of them, but then she didn’t.

Fair enough, jetlag.

POLICE attended an incident on Sunday evening out at Loddon Vale to control traffic on the highway between Slys Road and Canary Island-Leaghur Road. They were directing traffic through roley poleys that were stacked as high as an SUV, closing one lane of the highway.

A job well done in a rather weird occurrence.
