From Test to local cricket and more

MRS Yvonne Dawn Condely (Von) turned 100 years old, appropriately on World Kindness Day, November 13.

A lovely celebration was held by the family, while letters from King Charles and Camilla, and the Prime Minister were also received.

Congratulations Mrs Condely.


THE first Test is now under way in Perth and Nathan McSweeney got the gig to open with Usman “Uzzy” Khawaja.

Didn’t do too well in his first Test, lbw cheaply to Jasprit Bumrah in both innings. His test average would be two.

Day one of the Test and we all thought that we were doing brilliantly, until we had to bat.


PRIOR to the first Test starting, Pat Cummins was asked in an interview if he and Australia had the “nice guy” tag.

The Test captain said in an almost jovial manner that he wanted to shed that tag. Wouldn’t you think that winning the Test match would have been a little bit more important than this?

I think that Cummins would have expected some interesting questions regarding the cricket, but instead he could relax at what was a rather inane question.


WAS talking to old mate Freddy Grant prior to the Test and he hit it on the head how the Australians would bat. Predicted Steve Smith’s dismissal, falling across the crease and being lbw and got it spot on. Don’t think anyone would have thought that he’d miss the ball by so far though.

Then a couple of the Indians, including Virat Kohli, get centuries. Yeah, OK, the pitch came to them a bit, but crikey, not that much.

Then at 3/12 in our second innings chasing around 500, things are not looking the best for Australia (written Monday prior to the days play commencing).

Batting for two days is a big ask for the Aussies.


WITH Christmas just under a month away, there’s a few Christmas parties happening.

The Kerang Primary School held a wonderful day which included a trip on the Pyap and it’s always good to cruise down the river.

Two or three hangers-on had a pretty good day where everyone behaved themselves.


ONE of the hangers-on who would have had the opportunity to be there was Shane Morris. Wife Dawn is an integral part of the KPS social scene which always gives Shane the opportunity to attend. Turns out that he would have been rather busy getting some crop off, so he sent his shearing daughter Jas along, who had a wonderful time.

Very unlike Shane to miss a great social event. Hope the rain hasn’t affected things too much “Taillight”.


SPEAKING of cruising down the river, did I see that the local fishing club had a day out at Lake Meran? From what I have heard there wasn’t too much caught at all. It’s also always good to cruise out on a lake, but it’s better if the fish are biting.


QUICK chat to “Haysey” on Saturday morning and he was ready for bowls quite early. Think that he would have liked to get the match under way a bit earlier as it was going to be rather warm that arvo, but he was still doing real estate stuff in his bowls gear at about 9am. Good on you Graeme.

The Kerang Golf Bowls mob got their game going early but the Kerang Bowls Club started at the usual time – in the heat of the afternoon.

Really, it was only about 37 degrees, so we can’t complain that much. Wait until it gets to 40. But of course, they call it off at that stage.

Poses the question, would you prefer to play bowls when it’s 37, or not play when it’s 40?


MURRABIT’S Jack Campbell smashed 105 in quick time in the B Grade match on the weekend but that wasn’t enough to get the Blues over the line. Great effort though Jack.

The A Grade match that carried heaps of local interest was Barham Koondrook versus Wandella.

Barham Koondrook batted first and reached a competitive total of 178 with young fella Lance Davidson (you like that Lance?) top-scoring with 70. And did I see Tommy Guerra was back in the BK team? Ah, that’s right, his name had the bird next to it. Bohden McKnight took 4 fa.

In reply Flynn McKnight smashed a pretty quick 50 and Luke Murray and Bohden McKnight got amongst the runs to reach to total in the 36th over.

A disappointing loss for BK but both teams would have enjoyed the challenge against old foes.
