From Test to local cricket

NOTICED that young Flynn McKnight knocked up a quick fire 50 in the A Grade on November 23 against Barham Koondrook. Well done Flynn.

While on that, wasn’t it Jonah’s 21st on that weekend? Congratulations Jonah. The party was held upstairs at the Royal and someone told me that the mirrored pillars in the middle of the venue kept getting in Flynn’s eyeline – all night. At least we know he wouldn’t run into them.

YOUNG Ned Pay is getting around much better than he was just after his double knee op.

Friends Rabbit, Emu, Barney, Gav and Mad Dog have all said that he is doing quite well and all these bloke should know as they have had a bit of experience in knee replacement.

Best of luck to Ned and hope the other lads are all still doing well too – never get back to footy fit but it’s great to be upright.

DIDN’T the Indians flog us in the first Test?

Yes, Jasprit Bumrah bowled some great balls. There may even have been one or two that were “unplayable”, but in most cases a solid forward defence would have sufficed. Also in most cases, our batsmen never got into position to play a solid forward defence. Either Bumrah-anxiety or white ball cricket or both have conspired to deprive our bats of the decision-making capacity to decide when to play a forward defence.

Pretty sure they could all demonstrate a copybook forward defence, however they have proven they are incapable of applying it under pressure (either real or perceived).

It’s a long way back from there and due to an injury to Mitchell Marsh, they bring allrounder Beau Webster into the squad.

Why is it that they feel they need an allrounder? He’s not in the top 10 batsmen in the country (he’s 14th), and he’s not in the top 10 bowlers in the country (he’s 25th), so why bring him in? They would be way better bringing in another batsman. Just a thought.

THE final of the women’s Big Bash was on last weekend as well as the AFLW Grand Final.

The ladies’ cricket is always worth a watch if you are into cricket, as the shot-play is similar to that of the men.

But Kurl has always had trouble watching the ladies’ footy and I’ve always been a big footy fan. I do watch a bit of it, and so far this season most matches have been continually congested with so many ball-ups. But thankfully the North Melbourne team have transcended this and get the ball out at every opportunity making the ladies’ footy almost watchable. Credit to all the players as they show great courage.

In the grand final they even hit their targets more often than not, making the game more enjoyable to watch.

I know that Chum Chamberlain will most likely be spruiking the glory of the Kangaroos and probably expecting the blokes team to win one in a year or two.

They’ll probably win one before Carlton.

GETTING close to Christmas now and a discussion has occurred as to when to put the Christmas tree up.

The start of December seems to be the time that most traditionalists put it up – is that right?

Tinsel all over the carpet, taking up that corner where something of use (or junk – toys) usually goes and then coloured lights when all you want to see is the TV.

Nah, it’s never that bad, but the question must also arise when do you take the tree down? Surely it doesn’t need to be on Boxing Day, although that would allow a better view of the test. Half-way through January would happen in some households, but that might be a bit late.

As you can tell Kurl isn’t right into the Christmas decorations, but it is the best time of the year, because wishing people you meet a happy Christmas brings a smile to their face, and that’s important. You can start doing that at any time.

Make the most of the festive season.

SEE that there’s a new chef coming to the Sporties starting tomorrow I think. He’s been at the Barham Club for a while and has made the move.

The Royal is still doing a ripping job with their meals and the Exchange seems to be back on track too

HEADING off to Woorinen to umpire some cricket on the weekend and it didn’t look like we’d get a game due to some torrential rain around the Kangaroo Lake area. Then I received a phone call saying there was no rain at Woorinen so the journey to Woorinen was continued with confidence. Not a drop of rain once we got there, although the humidity was up around 90 per cent.

Think that some sport over the weekend was called off in Kerang and surrounding districts.
