From quizzes to cakes

THE KTHS staff often do the Brain Buster Quiz in the local rag, and with school commencing this week, they should be right into it.

Brendan Beard is the King of the Quiz with Dale Hall usually in charge of reading the questions out. They are pretty tough sometimes where you might only get four or five, but on other occasions, depending on the subject, you could get 15 or 16 correct.

Think they’ll do all right with this week’s quiz. All the best Beardy and Hally.

FOLLOWING a mediocre day umpiring at Koondrook the other week, I was lucky enough to catch up with a couple of local legends in Eric Lake and John Hill.

“Hilly” was fresh from umpiring cricket while Eric hadn’t been umpiring or playing, although he did play last year.

“Hilly” is back from gallivanting around the globe so that means he’s back into the umpiring gig. He’s one of the best around. Good on you John.

Of course the problems of the sporting world were immediately solved, from Test cricket to Golden Rivers footy (or should I say Central Rivers). Seems the point of difference of the GRFNL is pretty important for local footy.

Eric still loves his footy but he is not as involved with the local club as he once was.

Then caught up with that young fella Marc O’Neill that same evening. Marc had had a pretty good day with the bat in the Barham Koondrook match against St Mary’s, knocking up a timely 55, but couldn’t get his team over the line.

A longer discussion is warranted next time Marc.

WHILE on umpiring cricket, former Koondrook resident and now Cohuna lad Aiden Thompson is giving the umpiring a go. Played heaps of cricket in his day for both teams so he’s perfect for the job.

Good on you “Chedda”.

“2025 will be the year”. That’s what local carrot cake competitor Katherine Rosewall says. Katherine has been attempting to win the Carrot Cake State Final for the last six years and thinks this will be her year.

As she said last year: “I will continue to compete in the carrot cake state final until I win it, but the question is when?”

She says that this year the carrot cake recipe will be changed to have less oil and less salt. All the very best for 2025.

IN the local ND Lawn Tennis Association Division 1, the Kerang White team faced of against rivals Kerang Blue on the weekend of January 18. Probably not fielding their best team, according to Lefty, the Kerang White’s went down to the Blues who probably had one of their better teams on the court. This loss could cost the Whites a spot in the finals. Lefty will just have to fire up.

That Michelle Noonan is still going strong and playing some pretty good tennis so I hear.

STEVE Freeman down at Eastern Spreaders had a bit of a smile on his face last Tuesday because it was his birthday. Hope the crew down their spoiled the young fella.

IS it correct that the much-anticipated return of Honest Ken to the microphone at the Sporties is happening on February 7? Someone said that it was by popular request – can that be right? A request from the bowling ladies to get the big star back. This will be bigger than the John Farnham return tour.

Ken always does a great show. All the best old mate.

PETER O’Brien was complaining about air conditioners and being up in the roof – 48 degrees + up there.

Leave it Pete. Go fishing instead. But no, he looks after his clients. Legendary.

SOME local lads are still in the 2025 Pioneers squad. Ryan Bassett and Harry Bremner from the Raiders and Archer Lancaster from Wandella are all still in the squad of 57. All the very best lads, hope you all survive the next few cuts.

ENGLAND’S touring women’s cricket party have banned from speaking to one of their former players-turned journalist who has criticised them. As they haven’t won a match in the Ashes series yet, the criticism is pretty much warranted. So maybe they should be listening to her instead of not talking to her. Keep in mind, they will be trying their best, but not necessarily doing their best.

IN a similar vein, the Indian Cricket Board are blaming the men’s series loss against the Aussies on the fact that their wives and girlfriends were on the tour with them. Of course, ability was never an issue.

Don’t blame the Indian men for being unable to concentrate on their game when their WAGS are present…, it must be those pesky women at fault! (Tongue firmly in cheek).
