Here’s that ideal gift for Valentine’s Day

SO it’s Valentine’s Day this Friday. Ladies: Don’t forget to buy your Valentine bloke that nice piece of jewellery you desire, and fellas, buy her that chainsaw you’ve always wanted.

HAD a quick chat to Pam and Doug Rumbold the other day. Doug was in at son David’s shop getting some stuff to get his little digger going. Always the worker, Doug had to dig a hole and said he wasn’t going to use a shovel. Working smarter, not harder.

GETTING some milk from IGA and copped some lip from across the road. “Get to work” echoed down Scoresby Street, as Peter Colville was placing tables out for the Royal Hotel. Had no option but to get back to work and make myself a lovely cuppa with said milk. Thanks, Pete.

LAST week we mentioned crossing the double white lines in Victoria Street and in response to that one local dropped in and said how many drivers mustn’t know where their front wheels are, as they often park across the lines of the parking bays. Yep, if only folks were as perfect as you and me – and sometimes I wonder about you.

WHILE on that type of thing, the car parks in Kerang Woollies are a bit too close. The size of the parking spaces are OK but the gap between each row, or the road is way too small. Any car with a tow bar or those bigger utes make it all a bit too tight. Then we have the obligatory shopping trolley left in the perfect park you always wanted.

GREAT photo of Luke Murray as he was chaired off the cricket ground following his 250th match for the Wandella team. Luke is the stats man and always knew how many needed off how many overs or how many runs he was. Wonder if it was the club or Luke keeping count of the 250 games? Congratulations mate.

IT’S interesting to note that three of the four Cohuna, Barham and Kerang bowling teams are in the top three position on the Northern Valley Premier League. The League was formed with the idea of giving keener, better quality bowlers a higher standard of competition. Great to see that perennial ladder leaders Cohuna Golf are on top, followed by Barham 1 and Kerang 1 in third. Kerang Golf on the other hand haven’t fared so well.

ZANE Keighran, son of former Kerang legend Linton and grandson of Joyce made 104 not out for Melbourne Cricket Club on the weekend. He made his last 50 runs off only 20 balls! Pretty good effort playing in a high grade of cricket. Zone’s cousin Logan was also a bit of a gun who played for Wandella back in the day. No longer in Kerang, I hope Logan is still rolling the arm over.

SO Nully and Wyche-Narraport are combining and will become the Calder United Lions, playing in the Northern Central Football Netball League. Nully have done fairly well since joining the Golden Rivers League back in 1998, winning seven Premierships and seven EG Hunt medal winners in that time. They were NDFNL runners-up in 2023 and finished fifth in 2024. Best of luck to the Calder United Lions in the NCFNL in season 2025. Yep, it’s not far away.

OLD mate Ken Jenkins was telling me how he had caught up with Max Fehring at Barham on Saturday evening. Mr Fehring celebrated his 80th birthday in late January and on Saturday, he and wife Denise were out celebrating their 50th wedding anniversary. Max has served as a shire councillor, including being mayor during the 2011 floods, and has served as United Dairy Farmers of Victoria president. He is a Churchill Fellow.

KURL’S granddaughter was front and centre for the Newcastle Jets v Melbourne City Women’s soccer match in Newcastle over the weekend. Asked to be a ball girl for the match, Piper featured more than a few times on camera. Texting Piper’s mum Kirby as the game was on, I said the next time the ball goes past them to stand up and wave like idiots. That’s exactly what they did. Well done to the Channell’s family in Newcastle.
