From cyclones to footy

Tropical Cyclone Alfred caused a bit of trouble up north and is still doing so, although now it is called Ex-Tropical Cyclone Alfred (ETCA).

Once ETCA is no longer a cyclone and becomes a tropical low, why does he lose his name? They try their best to keep the name by calling it Ex-Tropical Cyclone Alfred. The weather event should keep its name and now be Tropical Low Alfred, but then how far do you take that?

Was Cyclone Alfred, then Ex-Cyclone Alfred, now it’s just a tropical low.


The Manager of Disasters in Queensland went on a pre-booked holiday as Tropical Cyclone Alfred was happening. Many people complained about this, but I would like to think that as a good manager, he had everything in place, even if a disaster was happening, so he could take his allotted time off. If he is a good enough manager to worry about while he is away, you would hope he is a good enough manager to have things in place while he is away. Take your hand out of a bucket of water and you can’t see where it has been.


Caught up with Terry Pay last week and he asked, “You still doing that at the paper?” Will be till I’m not Terry.

Terry and his family did heaps of skiing at Meran back in the day. He said that if the kids were skiing with him, their mates were usually there as well so he knew where they all were. Not getting into trouble.

Son Mick is still painting in Bendigo and Micks daughters play netball, Evie for Bridgewater and Indi for Golden Square. Evie has been representing the Loddon Valley League and previously the Heathcote District League in netball. Clearly loves the sport and that would bring a smile to Grandpa Terry’s face I bet.


Had a quick chat to Wandella coach Justin Robinson last week prior to Wandella’s practice match against Kerang on Friday evening.

Tinny is always up for a chat but the young fella is as toey as a Roman sandal for footy to start.


Spoke about Tropical Low Alfred earlier, and didn’t that weather system upset the AFL’s Opening round?

Always under question as to whether the opening round is a good idea or not, with two games cancelled because of the weather, the discussion will continue as this year was not a fair indication if it works or not.

I would say it is a fair indication it doesn’t work. Marketing failure.

Get all teams playing in as many different states as possible, free to air footy on Saturday as well and we will all be happy.


Pity that New Zealand couldn’t defeat India in the ICC Champions Trophy, but India did play all its matches in Dubai at the same venue. The final was also in Dubai, but we can forgive that as India did finish on top.

While on that, the 50-over game has lost a bit of its charm with it now heavily favouring the batsmen (or batters – sorry, I’m a traditionalist).

The governing body believes that crowds want to see big scores. I disagree and would much prefer to see a high-pressure match.


Had a chat to a bloke from Balranald a couple of Saturday’s ago at cricket and he said that their footy team has picked up a few ex-AFL players (a few being more than one but an undisclosed number). He did say they have lost about 16 though.

Kerang have lost a few players, the Raider have picked up a few as they needed to, and the Kangas should do pretty well this year. The CMFNL could be a closer contest than most think.


Former Rivers Raiders player Brodie Filo has won his third NTFL Best and Fairest, being the first player to do so. Reckon that makes it five league medals he has won.

Yep, his career highlights reel would look as good as any player ever.


The Blue Baggers lost a match that most would have expected them to win. The Tigers confirmed that the Blues aren’t as good as the pundits thought. A successful season is when you win all the games that you should. Carlton’s season is already in trouble

Even losing, it’s great to have footy back.

Noticed on fakebook that some concerned friends of one former local Blues supporter who now lives way down south were reaching out asking if he was OK.
