From bowls to birthdays and football

The Northern Valley Premier League pennant bowls competition seems to have been a success with Kerang taking home the inaugural pennant.

Did I hear that Birchip may be looking to put a team into the super league? Probably just a rumour, but it would also cause a bye if they did.

Birchip defeated Kerang in the regional pennant division. This means Birchip goes to Moama to play in the last 12 or 16 in the state – not too sure what it is. Think that it’s played later in April.

That Cohuna Scallywag Des Shelley has been digging up some old news. Being a Richmond supporter, he thought he’d better mention about the Tigers defeating the Blues. That was weeks ago. The Blues have lost a couple since then.

As a Tiger supporter, Des will go through the season expecting to lose most matches. It’s a big high when they win one.

Seems the Cohuna Carlton men in Des’ morning tea group have said the correct words to curtail his enthusiasm.

Daughter of Rose and Allan Millar, Rosemary, is now a Senior Sergeant in the Northern Territory Police.

She was Rosemary Bruton but has gone back to her maiden name.

Rosemary was formerly a hairdresser in Melbourne then Barham and many will remember her from Salon 27 in Kerang.

Bit of a career shift from hairdressing to working in the Northern Territory Police.

Of course, mum and dad are extremely proud. Good on you Rosemary.

Two local blokes were looking after each other in one of the town’s hotels last week over a quiet ale or two.

Both Chris and Peter then went home to do what had to be done before returned to the hotel for another refreshing beer, obviously to see if the other was OK.

Great to see locals looking after one another.

Attended a 30th birthday a couple of weekends ago (30 being the new 40) and a ripping time was had by all at what was a friendly get-together.

Some stayers were still kicking on at Tree Tops early the next morning.

Heard that Krackers committed himself to the cause, as did the birthday girl. Just before sun rise, she cleaned up, had a short kip, then woke up and got into the hair of the dog. Great effort.

Congratulations Kirstyn.

Local footy starts in CMFNL this coming Saturday. Backing Kerang to defeat Lake Boga and Koondrook Barham should knock over Tyntynder, who are said to be in a bit of trouble with numbers. Hope they can get a Reserves team on the ground.

Should be great to see Koondrook Barham significantly better than last year. Kerang won’t be as bad as most think and Cohuna could win it.

Loddon Valley and North Central leagues also kick off this week.

Golden Rivers have a while to wait, commencing their season on Saturday, April 26.

Always found it difficult when your league started a week or two later than other local leagues. You just want to get into it.

Had a bit of a chat to Smedley Napier the other day and he was keen to be heading to the Barham Koondrook cricket break-up held on Saturday night.

Of course, after our discussion, Barham Koondrook could have been winning the Cricket Premiership. No dropped catches probably the best solution.

Pretty sure that Smedley would have had a wonderful evening with the Raider’s lads.

Helen Granter’s sister Julie is over from Canada for a bit of a visit and brought her son David Tolentino over as well.

Some may remember Julie as Julie Cockroft from out Myall way. Sister Helen was a Dalley before she got tangled up with Colin Granter.

So these poor folk will have to put up with Colin for a while…. ‘sigh’.

All the best to all.
