From bowls to duck shooting

HAD to deliver something to the Fours Posts and who should I run into but Mark and Sharon Baker.

Mark has given up bowls, but his son Daniel has been appointed the coach of the Northern Territory State team. Daniel isn’t too sure how he will go but I’m pretty sure he will have a crack.

Daniel previously won the NT State Singles in 2024 and the Champion of Champions the year before.

So far this year he has won Darwin’s Club Singles which leads to the Champion of Champions. The NT State Singles are later this month. Best of luck “Bakes”. This will be one time I have no need to support Victoria. Hope you can win the singles and your state teams can also be in the winner’s circle.

IT was interesting that last week on the news, one of the losing coaches that hasn’t won a game this year, was stating that their team’s best was good enough.

Must say that I can’t stand this logic. I think he means that if they play well they would be good enough to win. So patches of play are obviously very good, but the game isn’t just one patch of play, it is a full four quarters. If he is saying that their best is good enough, he isn’t thinking about the match as a whole.

Hope that the realisation that teams must string together a full match worth of sequences of play to finish the game, and if those sequences aren’t enough to win, then the team clearly isn’t good enough.

Stop making excuses, face facts, make a change so the team has an opportunity to get better and things could maybe turn around.

Keep in mind that a lack of ability is rarely used as an excuse from a coach’s point of view. Think there is reason that it could be.

THE duck shooting season commenced a couple of weeks ago, but I haven’t heard of any great successes with shooters getting their bag limit.

Protesters are continually receiving more publicity than shooters and that kind of gets on my goat.

So yep, I am pro shooting and proud of it. I don’t shoot any more as my life has changed, but I do remember shooting ducks and having them stolen by duck rescuers. At the time my initial thought was that they were taking food off my plate and it was plain theft. It is also legal. What they were doing wasn’t though.

I believe that every duck that I shot was eaten either by myself or family and friends. So we weren’t shooting for sport, we were shooting to eat.

HAD to go and see “Lefty” at Autopro last Thursday prior to his team playing my team. All he did was laugh at how my team had been going … deservedly so.

The plan was that if my team won, I would take the car in on Friday and get the rear wiper blade changed, then not say a word. A smile at the correct moment would be essential.

DAUGHTER of Kerang locals Max and Lee Maclean, Jackie Osborne, is in the process of opening an Op shop in Echuca.

Jackie is a carer in Echuca and does a wonderful job – of course she does. This shop will be to provide work for a client and is a brilliant initiative.

Nice work Jackie. Sure it will be brilliant.

THAT bloomin’ Kerang Whisky Club still haven’t had their initial meeting.

It’s not as if they don’t see one another enough, and probably have a whisky or two, but it’s just probably a bit difficult to get everyone together at the same time.

Not having an official meeting is never a concern. As if that would prevent the consumption of the occasional dram.

DANIEL Chester, son of local Peter Chester, had his wedding on the weekend. Sure that the wedding would have been a great shindig. Congratulations.

Hope that local Barber Adam made it to work on Monday in good condition.

SPEAKING of weddings, Brodey Farley and Beth Trewin finally tied the knot on the weekend also.

Saturday’s effort was their third attempt at getting hitched as the other two attempts were cancelled due to complications with COVID.

Wonderful that they finally got to do this. If anything was going to prevent the wedding this time it was going to have to be a very, very serious problem. If it was a flood, they would have provided the guests with floaties.

All the very best to Mr and Mrs Farley and the boys.
