Shire buzzing during Easter

TOWNS in the local district all had a successful Easter, be it with regards to sporting events or just the number of people coming to the area.

Heard that the crowd at the Murrabit rodeo held the Saturday before Easter was over 4000. That’s got to be one of the biggest crowds the district has seen at a local event since a couple of pretty big footy grand finals were held in this area.

Great to see that a local club can get in and initiate such an event that is an instant hit.

PETE O’Brien has been working down at the Kerang Lawn Tennis Club Easter tournament for a few years with treasurer-wife Wendy and, of course, it was Pete who cooked the roasts.

Pete’s biggest job for the event was to organise all the recycling to be taken down to Hibbetts. Probably should say it was Robby Whitelaw who had the biggest job. Pete tells me that he had the cans, glass and plastic bottles all sorted for Rob.

KOONDROOK-Barham River Raiders had a sensational win against last year’s premiers in round two.

Even if NNWU were at half the ability from when they won the flag against Kerang last year, it’s still a great effort from the Raiders, as they are coming from a very long way back.

Credit to all concerned at the club, as we need to have the three local teams at the forefront of Central Murray footy.

THAT same week the mighty Cohuna Kangas had a big win over Balranald 26.24.180 to 0.2.2.

Admittedly, Balranald aren’t going to set the world on fire this year, but to keep any team to only two scoring shots is a mammoth effort.

One footy pundit from over the border did tell me that Cohuna may get a bit too cocky and this could hurt them down the track. I’d like to think not. If the fear of losing and the desire to win is there, then if they do their job they will be in with every chance.

SO yep, still on footy. I’m interested by Richmond’s Balta court case and him with a 10pm curfew until July.

This means he must be home by 10pm if playing a night game. I’d like to see Richmond play him until three-quarter time, then bring on the sub. Balta grabs his footy bag and heads home still in his footy gear without having a shower.

Of course this won’t happen, but I’d like to see it.

DROPPED in for the weekly visit to Murray Mallee Training in Kerang and the whole staff were out the front throwing paper around like it was a ticker-tape parade.

Turns out that their computers were down.

Great to see the staff get down for some hands-on work as they waited for the computers to come back up.

SO that’s it. Kurly is not going to change any more light globes at the Gannawarra Times. Not only was it a bit of a problem climbing the bloomin’ ladder (no ladder licence), but the wrong fluros were put in. Don’t know a thing about LED fluros.

Thing is it left the morning tea area in darkness until the electrician could get there.

The poor, precious staff had to prepare morning tea in the dark. I imagine morning tea with miner’s head lamps.

Kurl tried to fix the lights then went on holidays.

HOPE that all had an excellent Anzac Day holiday and that you took the time to reflect on the true meaning of the day.

Although I don’t remember my grandfather, who passed away when I was two, he fought at Suvla Bay in 1915 and later in the Somme and Ypres. My thoughts always go to him. We shall remember them.
