Manslaughter accused reportedly dies

A MAN who was expected to fight a manslaughter charge next month over the fatal shooting of a man near Cohuna in 2019 has reportedly died.

The Herald Sun reported that Daniel Karl Oberin, 31, died a fortnight ago, with his funeral held in Echuca.

He was allegedly involved in the death of Matthew Alexander in September 2019.

A court previously heard that Mr Alexander, 29, had been working on a car with two mates when Mr Oberin and a co-accused allegedly showed up at his Daltons Bridge property.

The prosecution alleged Mr Oberin was in a shed fiddling with a hard drive connected to the property’s CCTV cameras when Mr Alexander was allegedly shot.

After being committed to stand trial on a murder charge in April 2021, Mr Oberin’s charge was downgraded to manslaughter last October.

Mr Oberin was granted bail in January.

The manslaughter trial was due to commence in the Supreme Court at Bendigo in November.

It’s unclear the circumstances surrounding his reported death.
