Jeweller feels community support after break-in

WISHARTS the Jewellers Kerang was broken into in the early hours of last Tuesday.

Thieves jemmied the Victoria Street front door open about 2.45am, smashing three cabinets and stealing stock valued at $1000.

Owner Melinda Clough said the damage to the cabinets was the most expensive part of the break-in, costing about $20,000.

“We shut that Tuesday morning because the glass was absolutely everywhere,” she said.

“That was an all-day job to clean up the shattered glass, and we just moved stock around out of the cabinets that we couldn’t keep sealed.”

Ms Clough said the last time the store was broken into was more than three years ago.

“Obviously it is a bit of a hit to the mental health of getting up and getting going after all of this sort of thing when it’s quiet times anyway,” Ms Clough said.

“So the support we have had from locals coming in and checking how we are going is a help and been really lovely, too.

“That’s what sort of keeps you going and keeps the doors open.”
