Community leaders honoured

THREE dedicated community identities and a renowned craft group have taken out this year’s Gannawarra Shire Council Australia Day awards.

More than 50 people attended a ceremony last night at Kerang to recognise the 14 nominees for the shire’s major community awards.

Former Kerang District Health board chairman, Ken Jenkins is the 2016 Citizen of the Year, with the award recognising his long-term commitment to business and health leadership.

Kerang Christian College student, Lenny Brown is the 2016 Young Citizen of the Year, adding to the shire’s growing list of past Gannawarra Youth Council mayors to take out the honour.

Fellow Kerang resident Allison McKenzie – who has spent the past 40 years volunteering for children’s, sporting and community organisations – received the Senior Citizen of the Year honour.

The Cohuna Cubby House Quilters, who organise the Country Quilters Weekend, received the Community Service Award.

All winners will be presented at Tuesday’s Australia Day celebrations.
