Library’s craft time popular

THE Gannawarra Library Service’s summer program of events – which included three weeks of arts and craft activities – ended on Tuesday.

More than 10 children took part in making possums out of plastic as part of the final National Gallery of Victoria-designed session at the Sir John Gorton Library.

Events were held at the service’s Cohuna, Kerang and Quambatook branches, with each session including a story and craft activity.

“We usually have two to three events occur, but due to the program we’ve had something happening every day,” the library service’s manager, Kerri Sidorow said.

The largest of the holiday program of events occurred at Cohuna last week, where close to 50 people watched a magician’s performance.

Meanwhile, the Summer Reading Club has also been a success, with more than 100 children taking part since registrations opened at the start of December.

Participants have until January 31 to register the number of books they have been reading to be in the running for a $150 toy story gift voucher.

“We have been thrilled by the response to the Summer Reading Club, and we are looking forward to awarding prizes,” Ms Sidorow said.

“Parents may not realise that literacy levels drop during the school holidays, so reading is something you should do with your kids at this time.

“When it’s hot, one of the best things to do is sit under a tree and read.”

Planning is underway for the next group of events, scheduled for the Easter holidays.

“We had an Easter egg hunt last year, which was very popular, so we’ll be doing that again,” Ms Sidorow said.
