On-field efforts recognised

KOONDROOK/BARHAM Football Netball Club’s achievement to have three sides in last season’s Central Murray Football Netball League grand final received recognition earlier this week.

The Raiders took out Wakool Shire Council’s Sporting Achievement of the Year Award, announced as part of Australia Day celebrations.

The border side’s senior and reserves football teams, as well as the club’s 13 and under netballers, all made the final match of the season last September.

“As I said to our committee recently, the award reflects our off-field work, just as much as our on-field efforts,” Raiders president, Greg Lake said.

It was the second consecutive year the Raiders have won the award, with the club’s reserves premiership recognised as part of 2015 celebrations.

Efforts to prepare for the coming season are underway, with Neil Bradley to coach the senior football side for a second successive year.

Leah Ryan is the Raiders’ senior netball coach, with junior football and netball coaching positions to be finalised in the coming weeks.

“Everything is being put in place to ensure we hopefully have another successful season,” Lake said.

Meanwhile, 2015 Golden Rivers Football League under 17.5 best and fairest winner, Austin Mertz won the shire’s Sportsperson of the Year.

The award recognises the youngster’s stellar first season for the Swans in the Golden Rivers Football League, playing four seniors matches and taking out the competition’s top junior honour.
