One Wakool poll declared invalid

A BALLOT to elect a second representative for Wakool Shire Council’s C Ward – which covers Barham – will not occur next month.

The New South Wales Electoral Commission received two nominees for the March 5 poll, but were declared invalid due to an error in the nomination process.

Dates for nominations and voting to find the person who will replace Colin Membrey will be released in coming weeks.

No election will be needed to seek a replacement for former B Ward Anthony Jackson, who resigned along with Mr Membrey in December, after one nomination was received.

Wakool resident, David Landini was elected unopposed to represent the Moulamein and Wakool area alongside fellow B Ward member of council, Cr Katarni Lipp.

A father of six children, Cr Landini, who is self-employed, has lived in Wakool for most of his life.

Cr Landini said he was looking forward to working with his fellow councillors and representing the community, particularly during the proposed merger process.

Wakool mayor, Cr Neil Gorey congratulated Cr Landini and said it was important the community continued to be represented by a full council.

“From our community gatherings regarding the proposed merger with Murray Shire Council, it is clear from our residents and ratepayers that fair and equal representation is a concern,” Cr Gorey said.

“Therefore, as we continue with this proposed merger process, it’s important our communities are represented. The best way to do this is to ensure we have all six of our councillors available to advocate on behalf our residents and ratepayers.”
