GUNBOWER Island’s vibrant lagoons have been identified after a local environmental group received close to $9000 in State Government funding.
Close to 20 Cohuna and district residents learnt about the ‘What, Where, Why’ project at a community information display and barbecue at the Gateway to Gannawarra Visitor Centre in Cohuna last Friday.
The Gunbower Island Community Reference Group received $8600 from the Department of Environment, Land, Water and Planning last year as part of the Local Landscape Enhancement Grants Program.
The funding has seen name signs erected at 12 sites, including Safes Lagoon, Reedy Lagoon, Taylors Lagoon, Cockatoo Lagoon, Gum Lagoon, Upper Gunbower Lagoon, Longmore Lagoon, Phyland Lagoon, Turner Lagoon, Splatts Lagoon, Heart Shape Lagoon and Black Charlie Lagoon.
The group has also produced a publication, providing local information and environmental values for each of the lagoons.
The display included a PowerPoint presentation, with narration of the history of the lagoons by reference group spokesperson, Audrey Dickins.
“Gunbower Creek and lagoons are the life-blood of Gunbower, Leitchville and Cohuna,” she said.
“The health of these waterways underpins the sustainability of the ecosystem they support including health and well-being of people.
“Providing mediums that will educate and inform will lead to better understanding and positive outcomes for a sustainable future use of these important assets.”
