Sturt’s close finish

STURT House claimed its first Cohuna Secondary College swimming sports title in four years, in a result that came down to the final race last Wednesday.

The yellow house won its third title in seven years, accumulating 484 points at the annual event, held at the Cohuna Swimming Pool.

Sturt claimed the prestigious F.G Stanton Shield in the final event, by emphatically winning and breaking the house relay record for the second successive year.

The 2014 title holder, Hume House was second with 477 points.

Mitchell House finished third with 448 points, whilst reigning champion, Burke fell deep with 404 points.

A second record was broken in the 66-metre freestyle event, with Patrick Baxter breaking Nathan Orr’s 2003 record by 0.18 seconds with a time of 46.62 seconds.

Whilst most swam to honour their team colours, others competed in a variety of events, including some novelty, with points gained for participating.

Students also accumulated points individually, which determined age group champions.

Champions were Jake Nelson and Ella Barry (13-year-old), Patrick Doyle and Zoe Tooley (14-year-old), Noah O’Flaherty, Sam Bartels and Nikita Bicknell (15-year-old), Patrick Baxter and Chloe Windridge (16-year-old), Alex Keath and Jorja Bird (17-year-old) and Marcus Rogers and Jasmine Williams (20-year-old).

“It was once again great to see our house captains working so closely with their groups to ensure that they had the maximum number of students competing in each event,” principal, Stephen Brain said.

“This was a crucial component of the day as the eventual winners for the day were actually in a two-way draw until the very last event. Without their success in fielding a team in the house relay they may not have won the shield.”
