AFL Bulldogs unleashed

SEVEN Western Bulldogs players were let off the leash to visit district primary school students this week.

Mitch Wallis, Zaine Cordy, Caleb Daniel, Joel Hamling, Tory Dickson, Marcus Adams and Bailey Williams met fans during promotional clinics at Cohuna and Kerang.

Students from Kerang Primary School, Kerang South Primary School, Kerang Christian College, Lake Charm Primary School and St Joseph’s Primary School met their idols at Kerang, then the footballers provided a repeat performance for students from Cohuna Consolidated School, St Mary’s Primary School, Cohuna and Leitchville Primary School.

Bulldogs defender, Joel Hamling, 22, said it is important to expose players to rural communities, whose heritage and culture is based around grassroots football.

“We are here to give back to the community and say thanks to those who support us through our careers,” he said.

“Overall, the most important people in our game are no doubt the fans.”

Hamling has played 11 games for the Bulldogs after being signed as a delisted free agent in 2014.

He joined the kennel having previously spent three years on the senior list at Geelong.

Australian Football League general manager of game and market development, Simon Lethlean said players will visit over 60 locations across the country, allowing them to share their collective passion for the game.

“More than ever before, we are seeing players drafted from all corners of Australia so it’s important that the next generation get the chance to meet their heroes and maybe even take part in an AFL super clinic run by them,” he said.

Lake Charm Primary School principal, Jeff Millard praised the event, especially the leadership from secondary students who assisted in the running of the clinics.

“It’s great to see all kids having a go, even the girls, because the female participation in football is growing,” Mr Millard said.

“Most of all, it is great to see all students from the district schools mixing in together and working on their skills, with the help of their heroes.

“Kids love the footy, but sometimes it is hard for mum and dad to get down to Melbourne to watch a game, so for players to visit them is a real kick.”
