Easter market a hit

ONE of the district’s most notable monthly community events, the Murrabit Country Market attracted more than 5000 people on Easter Saturday.

Now in its 39th year, reputedly the largest market in regional Australia saw more than 250 stallholders showcase the best “bits” of the Murray River town.

Murrabit Market Committee president, Sandy Foweraker said the event was a great success despite the ongoing impacts of the blue-green alga in the Murray River.

“Our community injects an enormous amount of time and energy into putting on a great event and we certainly did that again this year,” she said.

“Our stallholders had plenty of variety on offer, and along with the old favourites there was a good mix of farmer type market stalls selling oils, cheese, honey, slices, preserves and fruit and vegetables.”

Entertainment for the town’s biggest market of the year was provided by Bendigo singer, Kim Ritchie and roving street performers, Tim Denton and Annie Forbes from the Melbourne-based About Face Productions.

Local community groups, including the Lions Club of Murrabit, Murrabit Fire Brigade, Murrabit Group School and netball club catered for the thousands of hungry patrons.

Stallholder, Andrea Barry, who creates rustic art in Echuca, said it’s the best market in the region for variety and client base.

“The people make this market so great,” Ms Barry said.

“There are lots of friendly people, and the weather is always beautiful.

“I love craft, so I enjoy meeting crafty people and sharing or exchanging ideas and experiences.”

The next Murrabit Country Market will be held on Saturday, April 2.
