Personal addition to art collection

A LOCAL artist’s picture of a cockatoo with “personality” will be added to the public art collection.

Paul Oswin’s striking watercolour with pen and wash was chosen by the mayor, Cr Lorraine Learmonth as Gannawarra Shire Council’s acquisition prize at the 14th annual Easter Art Show.

The Rotary Club of Kerang show attracted 423 entries from 115 artists.

Paul Oswin’s cockatoo picture will be added to the shire’s collection of pictures chosen at previous art shows by the incumbent mayor.

Cr Learmonth said that she wanted something colourful and more contemporary.

Art show judge, Maxine Wade said that the watercolour picture was “free and confident” and that the cockatoo exhibited “personality”.

Mr Oswin majored in Printmaking at La Trobe University Mildura in 2000 and his most regular art making practice is relief printing. He teaches art at Kerang Technical High School.

Bendigo artist, Stan Thomas earned the award for the best overall entry in the show with his watercolour, “Country Road”. The judge said that the colours flowed and had “wonderful looseness.”

A watercolour titled “Approaching Storm” by Murrabit artist Rhonda Willoughby won the regional encouragement award.

Best oil or acrylic: Lorraine Lewitzka, “Morning Walk”.

Best pastel drawing: Margaret Woodhead, “Sand Dunes”.
