CMFNL – Raiders open account

KOONDROOK/BARHAM claimed its first win of the Central Murray Football Netball League season at the weekend, defeating Lake Boga by 13 points.

The Raiders led at every change to rebound from an opening round defeat to Kerang.

Lake Boga went into the game as a highly-fancied threat thanks to an opening round win against Tyntynder, but could not managed against the pressure last season’s grand finalists dished out.

Koondrook/Barham led by 11 points at quarter time, seven points at the main break and 16 points at the final change, before sealing the result late in the final term.

Daniel Mowat kicked three goals for the victors, with Jacob Barrington best on ground.

Across at Cohuna, Woorinen held off a spirited Cohuna Kangas outfit, winning by 10 points.

The lead changed on numerous occasions throughout the game, with the home side leading at quarter time and at the final break.

The Kangas’ three-quarter time lead saw the team rally from 19 points down at half-time after the side kicked one behind in the second term.

Kokwam Niki – who was the Kangas’ best player – kicked seven goals for home side, with Rhys Bradley also playing well.

Meanwhile, Kerang remains undefeated following a 66-point win against Tooleybuc/Manangatang.

A dominant second and third quarters set up the win, with the four-time reigning premiers kicking five goals to two in the second term, followed by the only eight goals of the third stanza.

The Saints kicked five of the final six goals of the match  to reduce the margin – with accuracy (11.2) ensuring the home side was closer on the scoreboard than what they could have been.

It was a similar story for the Blues, who kicked 19 goals from 39 scoring shots.

Travis Matheson – who kicked five goals for the victors – was best on ground for the Blues.
