Girls game grows

EFFORTS to expand girl’s football opportunities locally will increase in the coming weeks, with plans for a Kerang-based team to compete in the Bendigo Junior Football League’s Youth Girls competition.

The Blues are exploring the option to enter a team in the competition, following on from Woorinen’s inclusion in 2015.

“We spoke to (AFL Central Murray football development manager) Jamie Macri and he said there was an opening coming up, and we are interested in setting up a side,” club president, Scott Clingan said.

“This opportunity will allow us to expand the club, as well as giving the option for younger people to play the sport.

Many of those who could feature in the Blues’ 2017 side will play in a youth girls exhibition match as part of AFL Victoria Community Championship celebrations at Swan Hill on Saturday, May 21.

Local schools will be encouraged to promote the match, with try-outs for the two squads to be held next week.

“AFL Central Murray received a grant to promote girls football, and this is a concept that David Alderuccion (AFL Victoria regional operations manager) has come up with,” AFL Central Murray football development manager, Jamie Macri said.

“With the national women’s football competition to begin in 2017, the opportunities for girls and women to play the sport are growing.

Meanwhile, Cohuna Secondary College broke a seven-year losing streak against Kerang Technical High School in its annual girls football challenge.

The Cohuna side took control of the game in the second half, winning 7.4 (46) to 6.4 (40) during last Wednesday’s match at Riverside Park.
