Coates’ Tiger role

THREE-TIME Kerang premiership coach, Troy Coates will add another role to his expansive resume in October.

The current Blues co-coach and Central Murray Football Netball League interleague coach will oversee Northern Territory Football League Premier League side, Nightcliff’s 2016/17 campaign.

Coates – who played 30 games during four seasons with the Tigers, winning the Nichols Medal in 2011/12 – replaces Damian Hale, who recently resigned to focus on his goal to be elected to the Northern Territory Parliament in August.

“I kept in contact with some of my friends who I made through playing football up there, and one of them gave me a call to see if I would be interested in coaching the side,” Coates said.

The role will not impact on Coates’ aim to secure a fifth consecutive CMFNL flag with the Blues, with a team of recruiters working behind the scenes to attract players for the Tigers, who were elimination finalists in 2015/16.

“I would like to thank Kerang for being so supportive of my decision to go up to Darwin and coach,” he said.

“The club support I have received has been fantastic.”

Coates is also keen to return in 2017 to lead Kerang again alongside current co-coach, Travis Matheson, with the pair to work out suitable arrangements with the club.

“Obviously I will be up in Darwin during the pre-season down here, so we will have to work something out with the club,” he said.
