Random cake a winner

DARCY Harrison “randomly” baked a carrot cake for the Cohuna Show.

Now the 18-year-old Cohuna Secondary College Year 12 student will exhibit at the Royal Melbourne Show in September.

It comes after Miss Harrison won the Victorian Agricultural Shows carrot cake competition, announced at the recent Northern District Agricultural Show Societies Association regional awards in Boort.

“It is more just a hobby for me. I have just always enjoyed it,” Miss Harrison said.

Miss Harrison has described herself as an amateur baker, regularly whipping up lemon meringue slices and fudge in the home kitchen.

“I only put the cake into the Cohuna Show for fun; I never exhibit at shows,” she said.

“I didn’t expect anything from it.

“I just like to have a go and like it when my family come in and views my cake.”

Already given a helping hand with a recipe to follow, Miss Harrison said the biggest challenge was grating seven carrots.

“Getting the carrots fine enough for judging criteria and getting the timing right when you are cooking are the two things you have to be mindful of,” she said.

“It is very easy to burn, which I have come close to quite a few times.”

Miss Harrison has only ever made four carrot cakes in her lifetime.

“I just randomly had a go to support the local show, and it paid off,” she said.
