STATE Emergency Service unit members thanked the community for their support during Wear Orange Wednesday celebrations this week.
Unit members Glyndia Gee and Wayne Gurnett spent time in the Kerang central business district thanking people for their support, as well as educating residents on the need to be prepared for emergencies.
Visitors to the education stand received documentation outlining the need to have an emergency kit ready in case of floods and fires.
The kits can include items such as a radio, torch, spare batteries, copies of documents and record, a first aid kit, gloves, long-life food, safe drinking water and a copy of an emergency plan.
Other items, including a mobile phone and charger, medication, pet needs, clothing and strong shoes, can be added when warnings are issued.
“For many people, when something happens they are in dire straits,” Mrs Gee said.
The Kerang celebration coincided with events held nationally to encourage citizens to thank SES volunteers for their efforts.
“The day enables the community to say thanks to the 45,000 volunteers nationally and 5000 Victorians who give up their time 24 hours a day, seven days a week to assist whenever help is needed,” Mrs Gee said.
