Expert tips for keen quilters

WORLD renowned quilt artists will share their expert tips with amateur creators at a series of workshops in Cohuna this weekend.

Award-winning tutors, Jenny Bowker, Margaret McDonald, Gloria Loughman, Nicole Mallalieu, Kerry Gillespie, Gail Pan and Shelley Mitchell will instruct about 90 students during the three-day Country Quilters Weekend event, hosted by the Cohuna Cubby House Quilters for the 13th successive year.

The group was honoured with the Gannawarra Shire Council Community Group of the Year earlier this year.

Sewing machines and hands will be working overtime as attendees converge from across Victoria and New South Wales to complete their own unfinished masterpieces, with tutors providing ideas and feedback.

Committee member, Pam Carmody said the event brings together like-minded people with similar interests.

“It’s a terrific event to network with fellow quilters, learn new skills and complete quilts inspired by shared input,” Mrs Carmody said.

The booked-out tutorials will be held across the township, while a craft market will be held inside the Cohuna Bowling Club and feature eight stalls.

Local retailers will alter their trading hours to accommodate late night shopping. Meanwhile, the Cohuna Cubby House Quilters will showcase quilts created by its members that will be presented to each child attending the Challenge cancer retreat in Cohuna later this year.

The event has been registered with Australia’s Biggest Morning Tea with raffle proceeds going to breast cancer charities.

This year’s raffle quilt has been donated by Deniliquin’s Fay Kelly, who will return with a group of local friends.

All proceeds from the event will be dispersed between local community groups and charities, including the Alternative Schoolies Trip to Cambodia, to assist with purchasing uniforms for Cambodian children.
