THE Murrabit Country Market has been shortlisted for infrastructure funding to construct a new service and information centre.
The market applied for $20,000 under the Federal Government’s Stronger Communities Program.
Member for Mallee, Andrew Broad made the announcement on the eve of the market’s Look Over the Farm Gate initiative, aimed to support district farmers struggling with the effects of prolonged drought.
Member for Murray Plains, Peter Walsh and Gannawarra Shire Council mayor, Cr Lorraine Learmonth joined hundreds of visitors for face painting, free fruit salad, health and welfare information from Northern District Community Health Service, animal nursery, farm machinery displays and farm-themed photography and children colouring competitions.
The market, which was originally designed to provide a market outlet for cottage crafts and produce, celebrates its 40th anniversary next year.
Mr Broad said the project is currently being assessed for final approval by the Department of Infrastructure, with an announcement expected within the next month.
“The Murrabit Market is a central part of life in the area, it is a great gathering place for locals to connect and to buy and sell locally produced food and products and is also a big draw card for tourists, attracting thousands to Murrabit every year,” he said.
Mr Broad said the centre will add new life to the town and assist in the promotion of the community-driven monthly event.
“The new building will also be able to host a number of different events and activities further expanding on what the town can offer to both those who live there and to visitors,” he said.
