$3 million town water works completed

RURAL water supplier, Coliban Water has completed $3 million upgrades to its Cohuna water treatment plant and water reclamation plant.

The $1.8 million project to replace the existing clear water storage tank with two 1.35-megalitre tanks has nearly doubled the plant’s water storage capacity.

Coliban Water infrastructure delivery manager, Corey Bourne said the projects were a major investment in Cohuna’s water and sewer infrastructure and will accommodate future growth in the town.

The increased storage will improve the security of the water supply for around 1400 commercial and residential customers.

“It will also ensure the plant can meet demand during peak periods and that there is additional water in reserve in the event of an outage,” Mr Bourne said.

Construction work on the two tanks began in February and was completed this month.

“There are some minor reinstatement works still to be done at the site, including planting native shrubs along the fence line to provide some screening and make the area more visually appealing,” said Mr Bourne.

Upgrade works at the Chuggs Road water reclamation plant, located about 3 kilometres south of the town, were also completed this month.

Mr Bourne said the major part of the $1.2 million project involved earthworks to rebuild the embankments and re-compact the base of two of the four lagoons.

“The lagoons are used for the biological treatment of waste water. The plant was built in the 1960s and the embankments and bases had deteriorated over time,” he said.

“We have re-compacted the lagoon bases to the ideal density for the treatment process to take place.

“The works will improve the efficiency and extend the life of the plant, and ensure we continue to meet Environment Protection Authority Victoria guidelines,” Mr Bourne said.
