Personal touch of caring love

A GROUP of local “angels” are providing a touch of care for local residents being treated for cancer.

The Kerang Community Angels delivered their first batch of tie hats, pump bags and tote bags to the Kerang District Health oncology unit last Friday.

Inspired by a Lions District 201V6 community project, the Lions Club of Kerang – through Lions lady, Beryl Tartaglia – is overseeing the effort to provide much-needed items for patients.

“We hope to not make lots of bags and hats, but I fear we may,” Mrs Tartaglia said.

The project is based on the Lions Club of Yarrawonga’s Turban Angels program, which involves club members making hats and bags for local oncology patients.

The organisation adopted the project as its annual district effort, with the program to benefit hospitals along the Murray River.

“Since July 2015 the Turban Angels have made 3000 hats and bags, and the Yarrawonga club saw the need for other Lions clubs to drive the project,” Mrs Tartaglia said.

Working alongside fellow Lions lady, Cheryl Gin, Mrs Tartaglia uses her local fabric shop as a base to develop the donations.

Sewing class participants and other volunteers now spend the first Monday of each month at Tarmac Fabrics between 10am and 3pm creating the bags, made thanks to donated materials.

“Anyone is welcome to help out, but we do need ironers and packers,” Mrs Tartaglia said.

The first delivery included 30 tie hats, 30 pump bags and 20 tote bags, with a back stock to be developed when the hospital runs out.

“The hats and bags are just perfect. It is a personal touch, and a touch of love for those going through treatment,” Kerang District Health’s oncology unit manager, Jeecinta Lightbody said.

“Something so little can make such a huge difference to people.”

The next Kerang Community Angels session will be held on Monday, July 4.
