Play-time a real splash

PLAY-TIME at the Kerang Swimming Pool will soon take on a whole new meaning with construction of a splash park to be completed by October.

Gannawarra Shire Council has awarded Western Australian company, Water Features by Design the tender for the Murray River-themed area.

The splash park is the first project to be undertaken as part of the $677,000 Sir John Gorton Aquatic Precinct initiative, which includes a new family and universal access changing facility, new solar heating for the pool and external decoration to the changing room and kiosk.

“This project will improve both the quantity and quality of the aquatic experience for our residents, creating a more attractive public area and allowing the facilities to be redeveloped to look modern and welcoming,” shire director of strategic development, Chris White said.

Works to remove the existing toddler pool, located at the southern end of the pool precinct, will begin in the coming months.

The splash park, which takes inspiration from the Murray and Loddon Rivers and the Gunbower State Forest, will include two play areas for specific age groups.

An area featuring water fountains, a waterfall and a place where users can fill and empty buckets of water, will cater for children aged from one to four years.

A second area, which includes water cannons, a tunnel and a shower ring, will be suitable for children aged five to 10.

“We anticipate the installation of the splash park will be completed prior to the re-opening of the pool for the 2016/2017 season in November,” mayor, Cr Lorraine Learmonth said.

The project is being jointly funded from the Victorian Government’s Community Sports Infrastructure Fund and Gannawarra Shire Council.
