New leader for Lakes Lions

AFTER serving as treasurer “since Noah was a boy”, Elvie Gannon is moving into the president’s chair of the Lake Charm Mystic Park Lions Club.

Mrs Gannon joined the club 22 years ago and in 1997 she became treasurer, holding the job ever since apart from a four year spell in the early 2000s.

The popular local resident took the president’s reins from Brian Helsham during the club’s changeover dinner at the Mystic Park Hotel on Tuesday night.

More than 35 people attended the dinner, including visitors from the Lions Clubs of Cohuna, Kerang, Murrabit and Quambatook.

Mr Helsham, who was completing his fourth term as president since joining Lions 30 years ago, said it had been a productive past 12 months for the club.

“In September we received our Lone Pine and granite block in commemoration of one hundred years since the ANZAC landing, and thanks to Brett Parkes and Harry Stirling for doing a great clean up job at the cenotaph,” he said.

“We held our Senior Citizens Christmas again, catering and entertaining for about 70 seniors.”

Mr Helsham said other notable club activities included an Australia Day breakfast, ANZAC Day ceremony, fortnightly meat raffle, erecting a new sign at Beau Morton Park and fulfilling the cleaning and maintenance contract for the picnic areas at Kangaroo Lake.

Gannawarra Shire Council mayor, Cr Lorraine Learmonth also spoke of this work when she was invited to deliver a toast to Lions International.

“Congratulations on your involvement in the community and the support you provide,” she said.

“I am very much aware of your project at Kangaroo Lake removing rubbish, which is a massive job that is greatly appreciated by the shire because tourism is the future of this area.”

The club gave away more than $6000 in donations throughout 2015-16, including $550 to the Australian Lions Foundation, $580 for child cancer research and $500 apiece for the District 201V6 Foundation, Bus Stop Recycle Shop and Lake Charm Primary School.
