CULTURES and cuisines from around the world were celebrated in Kerang last Sunday when more than 50 Cub Scouts from across the district gathered at Atkinson Park.

The Northern Rivers District event was held to coincide with World Scout Day on August 1.

District commissioner Carmel Tyers said it was the first time the district had organised a World Scout Day event.

“We went over to Kyabram last year to their event and we decided we could do something too,” she said.

Each Cub group in the district was asked to chose a country and prepare displays, which were set up at Atkinson Park on Sunday morning.

Each club also prepared food from their country, and conducted craft activities.

Countries featured included Italy (Boort), India (Barham), South Africa (Nyah-Nyah West), Japan (Kerang), England (Lake Boga), Mexico (Swan Hill) and Canada (Donald).

Craft activities were many and varied, but among the most popular were the henna tattoos offered by Barham and Roman soldier helmet making by Boort.

Ms Tyers said it was great to see such excellent participation, with seven of the district’s eight clubs represented.

“Everything went really well and we all had a great time,” she said.

The next Northern Rivers District event will be the Billy Cart Derby in Boort on August 28.
