Expressive youth impress with public speaking efforts

YOUNG students from primary schools across the region have confidently expressed themselves with thoughtful and animated addresses before an audience in the Lions District 201V6 regional junior public speaking competition.

East Loddon student, Libby Clymo and Barham student, Claire Telford will now represent the region in the district final at Tocumwal on August 28.

Libby Clymo won the Year 5-6 students’ section with a four-minute speech about a day in her life as a “crime detective” and her one-minute response to an impromptu question about whether students should be able to take mobile phones to school.

Raphael Umali, from St Patrick’s at Pyramid Hill was runner-up. He explained a day in the life as an “author”.

Other contestants were Sarosh Sajeev [St Mary’s, Cohuna], Maddison Neivandt [Leitchville], Alisa Hull [Koondrook], Amanda Bengay [Kerang Christian College] and Juisal Webster [Lake Charm].

The Year 3-4 students addressed the subject of their “secret life as a super hero” in three-minute prepared speeches.

Claire Telford [Barham] won this section ahead of Lachlan Farrell [St Mary’s, Cohuna].

Other contestants were Deaken Smith [Leitchville], Lachlan James [East Loddon], Maria Umali [St Patrick’s, Pyramid Hill], Daniel Veloso [Kerang South] and Emily Burrows [Lake Charm].

Gannawarra mayor, Cr Lorraine Learmonth, who led the three-member judging panel said that it had been a difficult decision choosing between the students.

“You are all winners for entering and standing up here to speak. Your teachers and parents should be very proud of you all,” she said.
