CMFNL – Blues minor premiers, despite draw

KERANG claimed its fifth consecutive Central Murray Football Netball League minor premiership, despite recording a draw against fellow finals-bound side, Woorinen on Saturday.

The Blues and Tigers were locked on 57 points when the final siren sounded at Riverside Park, with the result moving Kerang two points clear of fellow 2015 grand finalists, Koondrook/Barham.

The Raiders needed a Kerang loss and to have defeated the Cohuna Kangas by at least 125 points to have claimed top spot, but the Blues did enough.

In a tight tussle that saw the biggest margin be eight points at any break, Luke Livingston (four goals) helped Kerang open up a seven-point lead with minutes remaining in the match.

However, the Tigers – who take on Tooleybuc/Manangatang in this weekend’s elimination final – responded to level the scores before both sides locked the ball down, with an allusive behind to secure the win not achieved.

Across at Barham, a six-goal to nil opening term helped the Raiders defeat the Cohuna Kangas by 112 points.

Five goals from Jay Reynolds and four majors from Tom Lamb will give the border side confidence going into this weekend’s qualifying final against Nyah-Nyah West United.

The Kangas’ four goals came from individual goalkickers, with coach Rick Easton booting one goal in his final match for the club.
