DISTRICT students will today bring their reading into the community when they bring book characters to life.
A Kerang education tradition will continue with the 41st annual book parade through the shopping centre and a smaller parade will be held in Garden Park at Cohuna.
The parades will coincide with Children’s Book Week, conducted annually by the Children’s Book Council of Australia.
Schools and pre-schools have spent the past few weeks getting costumes and banners ready for the parades.
Streets in Kerang’s central business district will be closed to traffic for the parade.
Children will gather at Kerang Primary School at 10.30am for the presentation of Book Week awards before the parade starts at 11.30am.
The parade will see participants walk along Albert, Scoresby, Fitzroy, Wellington and Victoria streets, finishing at Victoria Square.
Roads along the parade’s route will be closed to vehicles during the morning and alternative parking arrangements will need to be sought. Leitchville pre-schoolers will be represented for the first time with students from Cohuna Consolidated School and St Mary’s Primary School dressing up as literacy characters.
Parents and friends will gather at Garden Park from 1pm as students from each class parade as a group, showcasing a selected book.The 2016 theme for Children’s Book Week is Australia! Story Country.
Both Cohuna schools have hosted book fairs as part of the week’s celebrations, with the initiative encouraging students to read outside of classes.
