Forest weekend a welcome retreat

COHUNA and district residents helped create an enjoyable weekend for children living with cancer and their families.

Twenty children, aged between eight and 12, and their families spent last weekend at Tree Tops participating in a variety of events as part of Challenge’s Cohuna Camp.

Now in its second year, the three-day event saw participants visit local farms, explore Gunbower National Park by four-wheel drive, look at vintage cars and view the area by helicopter.

The Cohuna Fire Brigade also made a special appearance, helping to make the weekend memorable.

“The three-day camp was an opportunity for some city kids to experience country living for the first time,” Challenge chief executive officer, David Rogers said.

“It is important for children living with cancer to continue to experience a normal life outside of treatment and camps like this are a fantastic way to do this”.

Challenge strives to improve the day to day lives of children living with cancer and their families and provide them with experiences, skills and self-confidence to embrace life and move forward on their journey.

Cohuna local, Brooke Southern, was the mastermind behind the camp, inspired after losing her sister, Rebecca, to cancer.

“My siblings and I treasure the many beautiful camps shared with our sister Rebecca and we thank Challenge for those opportunities,” she said.

“I know Bec would be proud and I am honoured to have done this in memory of her.”
