Above-average August rainfall

RAINFALL during each of the first two months of winter were fractionally below the long-term average, but August ended well above average.

The June total was 32 millimetres over 12 days, which was 3.4 millimetres below the long-term average. July recorded 32.6 millimetres on 17 days, 2.1 millimetres below average.

Rain over 10 days during August totalled 61.9 millimetres, which was 24.6 millimetres above average.

The last month’s burst of rain lifted the yearly total to 298.1 millimetres, which is 56.4 millimetres above average. It is the highest January-August total since the flood year of 2011 when 397.8 millimetres was recorded.

Temperatures recorded during August were close to average.

The average maximum was 16.1 degrees, which was a fraction less than the average for years since 1880. The highest daily temperature was 23.5 and the lowest 11.8.

The average minimum temperature was 4.0 degrees, just 0.2 of a degree below the average. The lowest minimum was 1.3 degrees and the highest was 11.2, which was recorded the same day that the maximum reached 11.8.
