THOSE who were involved in a scuffle during the final minutes of last Saturday’s Central Murray Football Netball League grand final are encouraged to approach the league regarding the matter.
Attention turned away from the match to an area between the interchange benches during the final quarter of the seniors match between Kerang and Nyah-Nyah West United after a scuffle broke out.
The incident occurred after a group of players who were wrestling on the boundary line edged close to spectators.
“The league board has instigated an investigator to look at what happened, which will begin next week,” league chairman, John Brookshaw said.
“I’ve been with the league for nine years, and it is the first time an incident like this has occurred.
“We hope that the clubs involved (Nyah-Nyah West United and Kerang) will co-operate.”
The league understands that two to three people were involved in the incident, with the remainder of those around the interchange area at the time watching what was occurring.
“We also know that alcohol was not a factor, which was our first concern,” Brookshaw said.
Those involved in the incident face penalties outlined in the competition’s code of conduct, which range from fines between $250 and $2000, depending on whether previous breaches have occurred, and suspension from attending league matches.
However, Brookshaw said if those involved do not come forward by the time the investigation is complete, the matter will be passed onto the police.
“Those involved can either confess and work with us or face time in court,” Brookshaw said.
The league board will also review the circumstances that led to the incident and the aftermath at its November meeting.
