March for the fallen

A GROUP of Victoria Police officers and others spent the week walking through the area to honour officers that have been killed whilst on duty.

Event organiser, Detective Sergeant John Capewell headed off from the Kerang police station on Wednesday morning to start the second leg of the March2Remember, 24 hours after the Blue Ribbon Foundation initiative left Swan Hill.

Mr Capewell, as well as Leading Senior Constable Jason Lane and Detective Sergeant Gerry Mercovic, will take turns walking each day up to next Thursday, when the march finishes in Melbourne for Police Remembrance Day commemorations.

“Jason did the first day’s walk from Swan Hill to Reedy Lake, and along the way Kevin Mannix, whose father was killed on the line of duty at Wycheproof in 1967, joined us,” Cantwell said.

Participants spent Wednesday walking through Kerang en route to Pyramid Hill, with the contingent arriving last night at Serpentine.

Subsequent overnight stopovers include Bendigo, Castlemaine, Maryborough, Creswick, Ballan and Melton, with the walk finishing at Kings Domain.

The group, accompanied by mascot dog, Patch, are carrying a baton that features the names of the 159 officers that have died whilst on duty.

The initiative aims to raise funds for the Victoria Police Blue Ribbon Foundation, as well as raise awareness about the effect of Post Traumatic Stress Disorder and clinical depression has on officers.

All funds raised will be used to purchase medical equipment for public hospitals throughout the State, which is then dedicated to a fallen Victoria Police member.
