Focus on more rain

RESIDENTS are continuing to monitor the district’s waterways, with another rainfall event predicted for tomorrow and Thursday.

The flood situation at Quambatook eased at the weekend, with the river falling from its peak of 2.18 metres on Thursday to 1.57 metres yesterday morning.

The Loddon River at Appin South peaked at 3.17 metres on Saturday and was at 3.14 metres and steady yesterday morning, and expected to remain above the moderate flood level of 3.10 metres today.

The Loddon River at Kerang is expected to peak above the minor flood level of 77.0 metres today, with extra flows released from the Kerang lakes area to accommodate for the extra water flowing north.

Flood warden and Appin South farmer, Darren Sutherland said there had been no major breaches of flood banks, although there had been several excavators in the district repairing weaknesses.

Meanwhile, a flood warning is in place for the Murray River, with the water level at Barham yesterday remaining steady just above the moderate flood level of 5.8 metres.

The focus has already shifted toward the next potential flood event, with a low pressure system forecast to move across the district this week.

The Bureau of Meteorology is forecasting between 10 and 30 millimetres of rain for Kerang tomorrow and between four and 15 millimetres on Thursday.

“In wet years the systems seem to keep coming, but all we can do is keep an eye on things,” Mr Sutherland said.
