FRIDAY’S Procal Dairies Gunbower Gold Cup meeting will not go ahead on Friday after organisers decided not to proceed with the event.
Above-average rainfall throughout September had helped with preparations for the Gunbower Racing Club’s major annual meet, but tomorrow and Thursday’s predicted heavy falls – that have the potential to dump between 20 and 40 millimetres on the track – put the meet in jeopardy.
“The track is good at the moment. There is a beautiful grass cover, and it would have been rated as a heavy eight on Friday,” racing club president, Gary Spittal said on Friday.
Usually held on the first Saturday of the month, the racing club and Country Racing Victoria approved for the meet to occur on the AFL Grand Final Eve Public Holiday at the Gunbower Racecourse.
It was hoped the change of date would have enticed a large crowd to watch the event – highlighted by the 1800-metre Procal Dairies Gunbower Gold Cup – and avoid a clash with the AFL Grand Final for a second year.
Refunds for ticket and marquee sales will be available, with the club to discuss the potential of rescheduling the event at a later date.
