WEEKEND rain failed to halt the opening day’s program at the 132nd annual Kerang Show yesterday.
Equestrian events, including show-jumping, began as scheduled on the arena at Alexandra Park in the traditional opening events of the two-day show despite some of the surrounds being saturated.
Kerang and District Agricultural Society president, Geoff Davey said that all events except the sheepdog trials were expected to continue as scheduled.
The sheepdog pens were inundated yesterday and show officials deemed them unsuitable for the competition.
“You can’t have sheep standing in that (water),” Mr Davey said.
One of the highlights for the main show day today will be the Poll Dorset feature sheep show. Mr Davey said that the show had attracted 60 entries.
Almost 20 millimetres of rain fell during the weekend, the majority during thunderstorms on Sunday night. The forecast today is for windy conditions, a maximum of 16 degrees and the chance of showers.
Gannawarra Times managing editor, Ken Jenkins officially opened the show.
The current Gannawarra Shire Citizen of the Year said that the show had survived for more than a century because it had retained its core attractions, celebrating excellence in farming production and home-making skills with new entertainment attractions in recent years.
Pavilion exhibits were on show last night and will be open for inspection by patrons again today.
The traditional pet parade, sideshow alley, a puppet show, a motocrosse display a mechanical “bucking bull” and musical entertainment were also evening attractions.
Today’s events include the continuation of the pony club competition, more puppets and motorcycles, sideshow rides and the judging of the show quest events.
