Shire toy run has enormous appeal

DISTRICT children from under-privileged families are in for a real treat this Christmas if promised support for the second annual toy run is any indication.

Around 200 motorcyclists are expected to collect toys and donations in district centres late next month in the second annual Gannawarra Memorial Toy Run.

This year they will be joined by car enthusiasts in a day-long drive between Kerang, Barham-Koondrook, Leitchville and Cohuna.

Plans were expanded at a men’s breakfast gathering at Cohuna on Saturday.

The toy run will start from Kerang at 7am on Saturday, November 26 and culminate with an afternoon car and bike show at Cohuna.

The toy run is held in memory of former Kerang resident, Paul Webb, who began working with Brad Dalzell to plan a toy collection before his untimely death.

The run was organised by the Anglican and Uniting Churches and the Lighthouse Group.

The first run last year attracted about 80 motorcyclists and raised $5000 in monetary donations and toys valued at $7500.

Toys were distributed to 67 shire families, 113 hampers were delivered and more than 100 people were treated to a community Christmas lunch.

Additional money has been provided for hampers for sick, bereaved and injured people.
